Sam's to Go is an institution. I graduated from UCSB in 1993 and spent many afternoons in front drinking pitchers and having a great sandwich. I am lucky enough to visit about every five years and the owner Mehrdad always remembers me, which is amazing given how many people cycle through Isla Vista. He even remembers my order. Amazing.
The sandwiches are as good and as big as ever and couple that with Mehrdad always making you feel at home and you have a sandwich shop every town should have.

The food is good, but the service is very unprofessional.

Even with my friends and I being the only people there, it took us a while to get our order placed because the people behind the counter were arguing. And when they were finally ready to take our order, a guy told us, "Finally you guys are ready to order." Um... excuse me? We were waiting on you. It might of been an attempt at trying to make a joke, but it sounded very rude and condescending. While we were ordering, he was slamming his knife onto the counter as well which made me very uncomfortable. He then used the same knife to make our sandwiches, which is pretty unsanitary.

To make the experience worse, as I was paying, the guy asked me, "Are you Hawaiian?" Uh... no? And even if I was, why would that matter? After looking at other yelp reviews, I see that lack of manners towards women is very common here.

On the bright side, the sandwiches were good, and the fries were nice and crispy. However, I wouldn't go here again.

Definitely my favorite place in IV, nice friendly environment. Great food with ample seating. Great beer choices and a big TV. Perfect spot to grab a pitcher with your friends and watch the big game. Everything is also very reasonably priced which is hard to find nowadays. The owner is also really nice and down to earth, he really embodies the prototypical IV spirit that many lack and he truly enjoys what he does. My personal favorite is the pastrami sandwich and it pairs perfectly with a pint of modelo, especial or negra, they have both.

A fast place to get a sandwich, that's for sure. My review is mostly for grabbing pitchers and fries here, since those are the only times I've ever encountered the service here.

My friends and I came on a Wednesday, bummed that the crowd at Woodstock's had ran us out of pint night and unanimous in avoiding Rincon, where we'd been a few too many times recently. Sam's serves one of the most expensive pitchers in I.V., but it's on Pardall, and we didn't feel like venturing down to Pizza My Heart or dealing with the loud people at Lao Wang. If you want a cheap pitcher, don't come here.

They were out of their only cider option when we came at 8 p.m. (Boooooo.) We went with a little-known IPA that we can't remember the name of anymore, but it was fairly strong and not the worst tasting of beers. Despite having such expensive pitchers (we paid $25 for one and more than $20 for the other one), they provide flimsy plastic disposable cups for use. I mean...I'm not about moderation or ruining the environment. It can't be that much harder to get some non-disposable plastic cups if we're concerned about breakage, right?

They ran out of our second-choice beer the second time we went back for a pitcher, but they at least gave us what they'd tapped out in addition to the pitcher we eventually went with.

On the bright side, the fries were fresh out of the fryer and delicious.

The sandwiches are so bomb here but the CHICKEN TENDERS ARE EVEN MORE BOOOMMBB they're so fresh and crispy while the meat is JUUIICYY  o man so good. I would definitely recommend the chicken tenders and the sandwich with bacon and avocado. The sandwiches are really filling and generous.

Oh ya and the workers are always really nice and friendly

    10/10 would recommend :)))
